Poetry
Famous poets, such as Homer, would tell their stories and beliefs with an
accompaniment of music. In doing this, certain instruments were selected to
play/carry melody throughout parts of the poem. For example, when the main focus
was on a female, she was often portrayed along with the Phrygian and Choric Aulos
(sounds mournful and lament, and it can easily achieve a high pitch) whereas the
Pythian Aulos was often used for males due to it's more grave tone. Poems would
also include Greek Myths, as well as morales.

Marriage

In weddings, music included for the same reasons that it
is today; to provide entertainment. Professional singers
would be present, and the songs played and sung were
considered to be a very important part in the wedding, as the songs would bring
encouragement to the couple, in hopes that the couple would have success in their
relationship, children, and would compliment the couple by comparing them to the
gods. A toast would also be offered in the beginning of each new song. When the
couple finally entered the bridal chamber, the chamber would be guarded by the
grooms closest friends. Outside of the bedroom would also be the majority of the
couples friends, who would sing songs of encouragement (in hopes that a baby boy
would be produced), or would sing of obscene songs, and often joke.

Lament

A Lament is a piece of music/poetry
(always played and could have been
sung) in expressing one's emotions,
generally grief. Lament's were used
often in funerals, while in mourning of the deceased. Lament's were created so that a
Greek individual could just express his grief publicly unashamed, without having to
find someone who would listen to him. Laments would also be used if disaster had
struck a city, as a song dedicated to brilliant musicians (such as Linos) or if the
death of a hero had occurred.
